Here’s our 2021 review of the leading options, and our pick for the best video editing app for iPhone (and iOS) this year.

best video editing app for iphone

Is there a roundup of the best video editors for iOS right now in 2021, we're going to take a look at the leading choices after our in-depth testing and finish by revealing my top choice for the best video editing software on iPhone and iPad. So let's just get into it. Okay, so after checking all the new choices, we're going to take a look at the best video editors available on iPad and iPhone right now, and as we go through, make sure you let me know in the section. What's your favourite iOS video editing app, and most importantly, why there are a lot of choices out there when it comes to video editing apps, you've got stuff like Adobe Premiere rush, light motion, video leap, filmorago, iMovie, inshot, kinemaster, Luma Fusion, PowerDirector Quick, Viva Video, vllo-video editor and maker, and wevideo. So there's certainly a lot of choices out there, but what I did was build a shortlist of my top four. Now just before we get to the shortlist, I really want to mention a couple of apps here. That just couldn't fit into the top four of them. There are only four of them, but they're still pretty good applications, and they're still going to let you make professional videos really quickly, and they're a light motion video leap, a kinemaster, and PowerDirector or light motion doesn't have the most intuitive interface, but it's still a really strong app. It's also a motion graphics and animation software, not just a video editing video leap but has a very intuitive interface with some pro-level features in there as well. PowerDirector is a new iOS app that's been a great Android app for a long time. They've finally got an iOS version, but I still don't think it stacks up, particularly to limit it to a top-four list. So as for our shortlist then that includes Adobe Premiere rush, inshot, Luma Fusion, and vllo, now I did a short Google search and couldn't figure out how you really pronounced it, so I'm just going to name it v-low.

Adobe Premiere Rush

But without teasing these any longer, the number one app on the shortlist is Adobe Premiere's rush. Now I'm a big fan of Adobe Premiere rush, I think it's so easy to use, I think the interface is very intuitive. I think if you're an absolute beginner, without too much overload or too much frustration, you're going to be able to start editing quickly in here, but if you're someone who is more on the experienced side of things, you're going to have a lot of professional-level features in here that will allow you to make the videos you want in this app as well, So it's a good mix of beginners though, but perhaps the biggest outstanding feature with Adobe Premiere rush is the fact that it's the cross-device cross-platform friendly meaning that you can use this on almost anything on your iOS devices on your iPhone on your Mac on your PC, you can start a project on one and open an app on the other, and if you want to open it on another. So it's the only app out there that works cross-device and cross-platform, but it's also kind of like the Adobe Premiere Pro professional video editing program's little baby brother, and what you can do is start your projects in Adobe Premiere rush, and you can open them inside Adobe Premiere, so if you want to update your projects or open them inside the professional software There are some great features that make it very easy for you to edit your images, such as audio ducking and auto levels of audio. And it will change it for you automatically depending on the clips or the music you're using in your videos. It also makes it very easy to reformat your video projects, so if you start with a YouTube widescreen video, and you want to create a portrait video version of an Instagram storey by clicking a button, you can easily convert and turn between the two.

The biggest downsides are the rush of families is that from time to time it can be a little bit buggy, but saying that it hasn't really been for a long time, so I'm assuming that in the new updates they fixed all of that, but it's also worth remembering that you can't really reverse a clip or play a clip backwards. It seems to be something that even the most simple video editing programme has, with the exception of rush, it's not a deal-breaker, but it's worth learning if you need to reverse or play back your images. It still can't be done in Russia.

As far as pricing is concerned, there is a free edition, but it only allows you to export or save three projects. So you're really going to look at one of the paying options and the subscription model is $9.99 a month for access to Adobe Premiere rush, or you can even bundle it with any of the other Adobe services so if you've already got a licence for Adobe Premiere Pro then you've already got a licence for Adobe Premiere rush as well, so you've got a package deal for Adobe Premiere rush and Adobe Premiere Pro.

So I really think Adobe Premiere rush is a great choice for someone who's the utter beginner right through to advanced, given the number of features and power, but also how easy it is to use. And certainly, if you're someone who's a novice trying to get your editing done. This could be a great leg for you in Adobe Premiere Pro and when you're ready.

InShot

I want to come out and tell this right away that this is probably the most simple app in our shortlist, and yes, some of the other ones that didn't make the shortlist more functionality and more power in short, but I think this app is definitely worth looking at if you want to be able to edit your videos easily without a lot of extra features the features they're offering you in there. But this is going to be fine, it's just going to want to make small edits to make this stuff look decent and get it out on social media quickly. So, just like I said this app is really easy to use, it's really fast to edit in the interface, super intuitive, but there's a lot of things in this app, and they've done some really cool stuff that makes it easy for you to edit your videos quickly. The first is that you can set up your effects or your colour correction, or your formatting, and how you want to clip to look, and you can select a box, and you can apply it to all the clips in your timeline, or in your edit, this is something that you usually only see in the very high end that they're very advanced applications, so this is awesome. They've got it in a more simple app like this, just like Adobe Premiere rush, they make it very easy to quickly adjust the format of your video, so if you're someone who's going to repurpose your content. I really like the way they do it, and how quick and simple it is to do stuff like putting a widescreen video and converting it to a portrait. It's basically just clicking on the various options or changing the background colour to add subtitles or blur in the background. This is something you can do in a lot of other apps, but in short, it's so simple and quick.

So as for the downsides then as I said this app is not a pro-level app is not going to have all the advanced control and fence features you're going to have in the more advanced apps. Also, you don't have control over the frame rate of your video. And there's also just one video layer or one video track that you can use to build your video so if you're looking for anything more advanced where you're going to stack clips on top of each other like adding a B roll or overlay footage. In short, you can't do that.

As far as pricing is concerned, there is a free edition of the mock innocence, but you can watch an ad to disable it. So if you watch the advertisement, you don't really have to pay to delete the watermark, which means you can do it absolutely free of charge and make unbranded videos, which is amazing. The other choices, you've got $1.99 to disable ads completely from the app, or you can remove ads and unlock more functionality, more stickers, more effects, and those kinds of stuff with their pro plan, which is either $4.39 a month, or you can pay a one-time charge and buy the app for about $43 price point. So rounding up that shot I think is a great app for editing your images, very quick, to rewrite them for adding captions and those kinds of stuff if you need to. But I'd say it's certainly targeted at more beginners than intermediaries. If you're an advanced user, you may want to use something like In short, just do a very quick edit to save you opening one of these other apps and having all set up to edit something fast is really where I see it fit in this list in a short time, or it would be great for someone who doesn't want to get bogged down in all the advanced features and advanced controls.

LumaFusion

The next one on the list is Luma Fusion right now, this is hands down the most strong advanced video editing software on iOS right now, this thing is completely awesome. It really mimics what you're going to get on something like Adobe Premiere Pro or Final Cut, except on your iOS computer. So this app has pretty much all the bells and whistles you need, from making a short fast little clip right through to an entire documentary or film, there are people out there who use their iPads and iOS devices to edit big videos using Luma Fusion. Now the interface itself is definitely not the easiest to use, particularly when compared to some of the other apps we've listed here, but it's because of all the advanced features and controls and settings you've got in there, so I don't really see it as a drawback.

And if you're someone who's edited on a different programme or app before, it's not going to take you too long to get up to speed in here, but you're going to be blown away by the number of features and control that you have one of the things I really love about Luma Fusion is the amount of efficiency and power you have in that you can literally drop several 4k clips, drop them off. I've had a great success, using Luma Merge on an older iPhone 7 with several 4k clips. And still, he's not missed a beat. I just really appreciate some of the basic stuff that they've introduced to what you'd usually see in a desktop video editing app, items like the ability to easily and quickly lower the volume on a track by track basis, what it's easy to pick up and switch clips around, but keeping everything in sync is almost like it's a Premiere Hybrid and Final Cut, with the final Magic Timer cuts. So depending on what you're actually doing or what computer you're using whether you're on a smaller screen or a larger screen, you can adjust the interface to make it fit better for you for what you're doing.

But as far as pricing is concerned, there is no free edition. This is a one-time buy, but it's still ridiculously cheap at $29.99, given that this is the most efficient video editing software out there on iOS, so I'd recommend Luma Fusion to anyone who's intermediate to advanced. If you're a novice, you might always look at this as well, I'd agree that the learning curve for you is certainly going to be bigger than some of the other apps, but if you want to develop and learn and master video editing then this might be the perfect app for a beginner as well as an intermediate to advanced user. This is going to do everything you need with all the advanced features and controls, but it's ridiculously cheap.

VLLO - Video Editor and Maker

And the last one, then the fourth one, is all right. Now that's one that's relatively new to me, I've spent a lot of time with it lately, but this is something we've never recommended before, and I have to admit when I first opened the app and saw the welcome screen that showed up, I was kind of like Yeah, just one of those very simple theme-based template editors, but it's actually the opposite. It's amazing. It doesn't have all the pro features and stuff that Luma Fusion does, it probably doesn't even have as intuitive an interface as Adobe Premiere rush, but it's still very easy to use and has some awesome features in it, one of the hallmarks for me is the layers of adjustment and the layers of the effect, where you can add all of your effects or any changes you've made. But working with adjustment layers and being able to add bulk or batch to your entire clips, or even to several clips in one sitting, is just crazy. This is something that only the more advanced desktop video editing apps don't usually see on an app like this so it's a nice addition, there's also some really cool features in there like being able to ripple edit left ripple edit right so you can cut your timeline and delete a chunk in one stage. Instead of going through and adding and picking and deleting cards. So there are some ways you can edit your videos easily, and Luma Fusion has this as well, which is why I'm very blown away that you've got it in this app as well. I really really like the way they show the audio waveform or the visual representation of the audio in your videos on top of the clips themselves. This is something that most video editing apps don't include at all, let alone present it as it is in this app, making it so much easier to edit your footage down, if you have audio in your videos, because you can visually see where those audio markers are, and this is another app that makes it really easy to change between different video formats. So, if you're interested in rewriting your content, you can easily do it in here, and you also have the ability to stack or layer your video clips in here, so if you want to do some more advanced editing and drop stuff like B roll or overlay footage, you can do that in here, too, and just while we're on multiple layers of video while you can do it in there and while it works pretty well.

I don't think it's as intuitive, or it's more cumbersome than something like Adobe Premiere rush, or something like Luma Fusion when it comes to how you're only stacking videos on their own separate sheet, stacking a video in here is almost nesting the video within the other. So this isn't too bad if you're only going to add one more sheet, but if you want to add two or three, that's when it's hard to deal with. And that's when it's very hard to turn and choose between which clip you want to change to.

As far as pricing is concerned, there is a free version of this app that doesn't have a watermark, meaning that you can only use the simple features of exporting your video, and it won't have any branding or watermark on it. But in order to completely activate the app and access all the pro-level features, like stuff like multiple video tracks, you'll need to buy the app for a one-time fee, and this one is ridiculously cheap at $14.99, a one-time fee, so I'd suggest vlow to someone who's at the utter beginner level right up to the intermediate user, I think you're going to have resources and features.

If you just want to do some basic stuff, it's going to be very intuitive for you to do that, but if you want to have access to a lot of those extra features and things you've got in there, too. And certainly for someone on the more experienced side of things that has access to the layers of modification and the amount of control that you have over the way you're actually editing in the timeline. This is going to be a great choice for you, too, but it certainly doesn't have all the advanced features and power of anything like a Luma fusion.

So these are our top four iOS video editing applications right now. It'll be difficult now, but if I had to pick a winner. I'd say it's going to be Luma Fusion, hands down because of the amount of features and power you have, there's nothing even similar to the level of technical software and professional features you've got in there. It's like a desktop video editing programme or a video editing software on your iOS computer, I'm someone who's been editing professionally for a very long time. And he's so crazy about what you're getting for $29.99, a one-time charge. Plus, it's just impressive how well it fits with multiple layers of 4k footage, yeah. Well done, well performed. Now I want to add a really fast runner up here, and that needs to Adobe Premiere rush. I love that cross-platform cross-device, I can start it on one device, open it on another, but I also love that you're able to edit really fast without getting bogged down in HIPAA settings and stuff, but it still has a lot of Pro Tools and everything in it, so that's my close runner up and I'm also totally blown away with vlow will vllo.
